Laphroaig grundades år 1815 av bröderna Donald och Alexander Johnston på ett ställe som brukade vara en lantgård. Läget var nästan perfekt för whisky tillverkning - en liten ö vid Atlanten och jämn tillgång av vatten från en granitgruva i Kilbride Hills. Namnet Laphroaig betyder någotlunda ”vacker öde ö vid en bred vik”. Ian Hunter hörde till Johnstons släkt, och det var med hans ledning som destilleriet utvidgades för första gången på 1920-talet. Han buteljerade också Laphroaig för första gången som single malt - före detta såldes whiskyn i kannor till lokala människor och för blandning av whisky. Hunter byggde två pannor till så de blev fyra sammanlagt och började självständigt sälja whiskyn utomlands. Laphroaig såldes även som medicin i USA under förbudstiden. Laphroaig skrev historia på 1954, då Bessie Williamson blev den första kvinnliga chefen för destilleriet.
