TIO PEPE FINO SHERRYIn 1835 the 23 year old Manuel Maria González Ángel came to Jerez, willing to find a place in the thriving and booming Sherry industry. Motivated by the constant growth in exports, he purchased that very year a small winery, where he started producing and exporting sherry. On a business trip to England he had a successful meeting with Mr. Robert Blake Byass, a wine importer, who became his agent and 20 years later - in 1855 - also his partner in the company, which hereafter was called Gonzalez Byass. Another important person in the youth of the company was Manuel’s uncle, José Angel, who was a renowned expert in Jerez-wines and especially the dry Fino qualities. Everybody in Jerez called him ”tio Pepe” - uncle Pepe - and so this name was naturally linked with the special wines of exquisite quality that he put on vats, which became the start of the world famous Tio Pepe sherry.
