Count Desiderius Pongracz graduated a Master of Viticulture in Hungary in 1944. After Hungary’s surrender, he was captured and sent to the labour camps in Siberia. After his release, he moved to Stellenbosch in South Africa in 1958. Pongrácz helped shape the South African wine industry through his intellect, insight, knowledge, innovation and vision. He had a major influence on the introduction of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir and understood the future of South African wine. In fact, he wrote the book on viticulture that is still studied by winemaker students in the Cape today. But Pongrácz is not just about winemaking. It’s about the character, charisma and skill of the man who inspired what has grown into the country’s most adored Cap Classique. It is no small wonder that the wine that bears his name stands head and shoulders above the rest. Made in the tradition of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Pongrácz is a fine testament to the man who inspired it.
